Crushing victory in our war against fly-tipping

Our environmental enforcement team have been clamping down on fly-tippers in the borough, with a 15 per cent reduction in incidents over the past 12 months compared to the previous year.

A recent success against this type of crime was a direct result of teamwork between ourselves and the police.

When no one claimed an abandoned van, linked to a spate of fly-tipping incidents, there was only one course of action in mind. Under a new legal procedure the vehicle was issued with a waste crime vehicle seizure notice. When no one responded to claim it (these notices are published on our website and claims must be made within 15 days) it was crushed.

A film that shows the crushing of the vehicle has been put together by the Hertfordshire Fly Tipping Group (FTG) – a multi-agency task force made up of Hertfordshire's local authorities*

Cllr Janice Marshall, Portfolio Holder for Environmental, Sustainability and Regulatory Services, said: "Fly-tipping will not be tolerated in Dacorum and our officers are determined to crack down on the anti-social minority who blight our neighbourhoods with illegally dumped waste. We spend thousands of pounds each year cleaning up after fly-tipping incidents. This case shows how seriously the courts and ourselves consider such incidents and their effect on our local community."

In 2016 the Police and Crime Commissioner set up a £400,000 fund to support partnership schemes around fly-tipping and other problems. We recently submitted a bid for the purchase of new cameras for fly-tipping hotspots across the borough, plus extra money to raise public awareness of waste responsibilities.

Anyone who comes across rubbish that has been fly-tipped should report it to us. If you witness fly-tipping in progress, contact the police straight way by calling 999, making a note of the vehicle registration number and descriptions of any people involved.

More information can be found on our web pages about vehicle seizure notices and how to report report fly-tipping.
