This is the year Dacorum said "We Do!"

Recycle Week Logo - Bathroom RecyclingThis week (24 to 30 September)  sees the 15th annual National Recycling week take place, and this year's theme is "We do, because it matters."

This year people have been motivated to care about the environment in a way they never have before, partly due to the effect of the BBC's Blue Planet programme, which highlighted the issue of recycling plastic.

With billboard advertising across the nation, a national tour, and a huge digital campaign, this year's event is the biggest and boldest yet - celebrating the fact that more and more of us are recycling.

But it's important to get recycling right. As part of Recycle Week, residents are being encouraged to take some simple steps to make their recycling efforts better than ever.

Top tips include:

  • Recycle more of these items - shampoo and shower gel bottles, aerosol cans, juice cartons, black plastic trays and aluminium foil (scrunch it into a tennis ball-sized lump first).
  • Make sure these never go in your blue-lidded recycling bin - clothes, nappies or soft plastics such as cellophane, plastic film, crisp packets, sweet wrappers and carrier bags.
  • All recycling should be clean and loose, so remember to wash and squash your recyclables if needed.

Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means that it will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way, keeping materials in use and out of the environment.

Recycle Now, the national campaign for recycling, has a Recycling Locator tool to help householders identify what can be recycled locally.

To find out more about Recycle Week, and to use the Recycling Locator visit Recycle Now's website.

Residents can also find out what goes in each recycling bin by visiting our Bins and recycling page or by emailing r4d@dacorum.gov.uk with any specific questions about items or materials that are not listed on our website.

Do your bit to encourage recycling by adding the Recycling Locator widget to your website. To apply and host the widget, email partnerenquiries@wrap.org.uk.
