Heath Lane Cemetery was opened in 1878 and was the first municipal cemetery in the Dacorum area.

It is of Victorian design and boasts two chapels (although these are no longer in use). One of the chapels was originally used for the burial services for members of the Church of England or "conformists", while the other chapel was used for the burial services of other religions, or "non-conformists".

The cemetery also has a large number of redwood trees, some of the largest in the Dacorum area.

We have recently begun a programme to restore the more historical memorials within the cemetery. The memorials have failed the stability test, which is used to ensure safety in our cemeteries. These memorials have a historic value but we are unable to trace owners or family members.

Woodwells Cemetery was opened in 1961 and is our second cemetery in Hemel Hempstead (the other being Heath Lane).

Woodwells was first opened as a 4.5-acre site, and has since grown to 12 acres.

Woodwells was the first cemetery in Dacorum to have a lawn memorial layout and is the only one to have woodland burials. We are concerned with any form of damage to the environment and recognise that burials can be designed to offer many benefits to wildlife. The creation of a habitat for wildlife will assist in increasing the amount of birds, mammals, insects and flowers and also provide a burial area for those departed, who wish to ‘return to nature’.

Woodwells offers a children’s burial area, which is designed to assist those coping with the bereavement of the young. It also offers a dedicated cremated remains burial area, for those who have opted to cremate their loved one and still wish to have a memorial dedicated to them.
