The electoral register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You need to be on the electoral register to vote in UK elections and referendums. Registering for other council services or paying Council Tax does not register you to vote.
Who can register to vote?
You can register to vote if you are:
- 16 years old or over and
- a British citizen
- an Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizens. Qualifying Commonwealth citizens are those who have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require such leave.
Annual canvass of electors
Between October 2013 and February 2014 we will be carrying out a canvass of all properties within the borough. This is known as the 'annual canvass'. You will receive an annual registration form that will show the names of the electors registered at your address.
The law says you have to give the information we ask for on the form and register every year to make sure we hold your correct details.
A revised register will be published on 17 February 2014. If your circumstances change outside of the canvass period you can register by completing a registration form.
Confirming your details
If the details on your registration form are correct then you can confirm these by phone, by text message or online at www.registerbyinternet.com/dacorum. To confirm your details you will be asked for the security codes printed on the top right hand side of your registration form. Once you have confirmed your details you do not need to return your form. If you do not have access to a telephone or computer you can confirm your details by signing the registration form and returning it in the prepaid envelope provided.
If the names on your registration form are not up-to-date or you need to include more names, you must cross out any names that are wrong and add any new names in the available spaces. Sign and date the form at the bottom and return it in the prepaid envelope provided.
Important information about your personal details
Each year we prepare two versions of the electoral register: the full register and the edited register.
The full register lists the name and address of everyone who is registered to vote. It is used to show who can vote in elections and referendums. The edited register is available for general sale to commercial companies to use for marketing purposes - what you may consider to be junk mail.
You now need to decide each year if you want to be included on the edited version of the electoral register. If you opted out in previous years and do not wish to be included on the edited register again this year, you will need to confirm your choice again on the registration form or during the internet and freephone registration process. If you are registering by text, you cannot change whether your details appear on the edited register and will automatically be included.
