Rights

As one of our tenants, many of your rights are set out in law and will depend on the type of tenancy that you have with us. 

Your rights as a council tenant

  • The right to live in the property
  • Security of tenure (secure tenants only)
  • Succession
  • Assignment (not demoted tenants)
  • The right to take in lodgers (not introductory or demoted tenants)
  • The right to exchange tenancies (not introductory or demoted tenants)
  • The right to apply for a transfer

  • The right to make alterations and improvements (not introductory or demoted tenants)  
  • The right to compensation for improvements (not introductory or demoted tenants)
  • The right to have repairs carried out 
  • The right to see your personal information
  • The right to be consulted
  • The right to get involved
  • The Right to Manage lets tenants and leaseholders take over certain management responsibilities from their landlord. (You would first need to set up a Tenant Management Organisation with the backing of other tenants in your area.)
