Windrush 75

Drummers at Windrush event in Gadebridge Park, Hemel HempsteadThe arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks in 1948, bringing 500 passengers from the Caribbean, is a moment that shaped modern Britain. National Windrush Day marks the anniversary of the arrival and celebrates the contribution and achievements of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

Between 22-24 June 2023, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of Windrush with a series of events and activities, in partnership with the iCane Foundation.

On Thursday 22 June, we commemorated National Windrush Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the Walled Garden in Gadebridge Park. The ceremony was opened by the Mayor of Dacorum, Cllr William Allen and attendees enjoyed music, readings and prayers.

On Friday 23 June, The Old Town Hall hosted a screening of the Sam King documentary, with his son the Reverend Michael King, as guest speaker.

Finally, on Saturday 24 June, we held a Windrush 75 event, alongside our annual Armed Forces Day event, in Gadebridge Park. Visitors enjoyed exploring the Windrush stalls to learn more about Windrush and play games of African, Jamaican and Caribbean origin. The crowd were also entertained, and invited to join in, a performance by the amazing Hemel Hempstead Community Drummers.

Thank you to the iCane Foundation, and everyone who supported the events and activities.
