Hemel Hempstead Crematorium has been chosen as a finalist in the 2024 Civic Trust Awards, a ceremony which celebrates great buildings and designs that are eco friendly, easy for everyone to use, and make towns and cities better places to live.

The Civic Trust Awards, known for honouring outstanding architectural and design achievements, have identified Hemel Hempstead Crematorium among the Regional Finalists, marking a significant acknowledgment of its exceptional attributes.

This prestigious nomination highlights the crematorium's unique design elements and its commitment to providing a serene and inclusive space for mourners. The site is situated within the picturesque Green Belt south of Hemel Hempstead and boasts a design that maximises natural light and scenic views, using the surrounding landscape as a poignant backdrop for the chapel.

The 770-square-metre facility includes a pavilion for memorials and a chapel for up to 140 people. Its asymmetrical layout, with the positioning of the lectern slightly off centre, is designed for intimacy regardless of service size, and the use of engineered timber creates a serene atmosphere.

Extensive landscaping, including memorial gardens, woodland areas, and mown grass paths, have also been integrated seamlessly into the design, emphasising the importance of a serene and well-organised space for visitors and staff alike.

Hemel Hempstead Crematorium is owned and managed by West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, which comprises Watford Borough Council, Dacorum Borough Council, Hertsmere Borough Council, St Albans City and District Council, and Three Rivers District Council.

Cllr Aga Dychton, Vice Chair of the West Herts Crematorium Joint Committee, said: "We are immensely proud to be recognised as a Regional Finalist in the Civic Trust Awards. This nomination is a testament to the Joint Committee’s commitment to creating a serene, accessible, and inclusive space for families to commemorate their loved ones while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape."

The Hemel Hempstead Crematorium team are eagerly anticipating the announcement on 8 January 2024, to learn if it will be named a National/International Winner or Highly Commended. Find out more on the Civic Trust Awards website
