Outdoor pool at Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre currently closed


Statement from Everyone Active (Hemel Hempstead):

“We have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to put everything in place for the opening of the outdoor pool ready for the summer season. Unfortunately, due to a national problem in the supply of pool water treatment chemicals, we are having to make the difficult decision to keep the outdoor pool closed for the current time to prioritise the opening of the indoor swimming pools.

"The pool chemical shortage is due to a number of reasons, including a manufacturing plant in the USA which was destroyed by Hurricane Laura, and a second plant in the USA which was partially damaged by fire, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other supply chains affected by the war in Ukraine. This is a problem for the swimming pool industry as a whole and you can see the difficulties many other pools and leisure facilities are currently experiencing in various articles online.

"The close management of pool water quality is something we take very seriously at Everyone Active. The outdoor pool requires the use of specific pool chemicals, including chlorine, which is in very low supply. It also uses significantly more chlorine than our indoor pools here at Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre, because the sun breaks down chlorine at a faster rate. We are managing our supplies very carefully to ensure we have enough to keep all indoor pools open.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation and we are ordering supplies regularly to keep our stock as high as possible. When we are in a position to secure enough regular supplies of water treatment chemicals we will be able to open the outdoor pool. We are hoping to open in time for the school summer holidays but, if the situation improves sooner, we will introduce sessions before then.

"We understand the disappointment that this news brings and would like to apologise for the inconvenience.
