Community comes together to officially open Northridge Way Basketball Court

Northridge Way basketball court official opening

We officially opened our Northridge Way Basketball Court at the weekend, following a major refurbishment.

The community, councillors and members of Hemel Storm basketball team gathered for the opening ceremony on Saturday (28 May 2022).

Deputy Mayor Alan Johnson declared the court open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and families were invited to take part in a basketball shoot-out with players from Hemel Storm.

The court has been transformed with a new all-weather sports surface, new hoops, fencing and a small seating area.

We led the project with initial funding of £17,000. Claire Stratford, our Community Partnerships Wellbeing Officer, worked in the community to secure additional sponsorship from Hemel Hempstead firm Whitton Electrical, based in Maylands, which gave just over £27,000.

Cllr Graeme Elliot, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services and Ward Councillor for Chaulden and Warners End, said: “This is the only full-sized basketball court in Hemel Hempstead and is now a fantastic facility for our residents. We worked with the basketball community and the wider community to make this happen. Thank you to Claire Stratford, and Whitton Electrical for its sponsorship, in helping to provide a facility for the borough to be proud of.”

Cllr Julie Banks, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “We are committed to providing access to first-class sporting facilities for our residents and the new refurbished court is proving to be a fantastic space for basketball players and our local clubs. We’re really proud to provide a facility of such high standard to our residents and it’s a real indication of what can be achieved when the community works together.”

Martin Bruce from Whitton Electrical said: “We’re really proud to have been part of providing a facility of this standard for Dacorum. We really wanted to put back into the community and provide somewhere for young people to develop their skills and fitness. It’s fantastic to see it open and being used by so many players already.”
