Councillor John Birnie has been appointed as the new Mayor of Dacorum.
Cllr Birnie was sworn in at the annual Mayor Making Ceremony earlier this month.
Cllr Birnie has acted as Deputy Mayor for the past year and has been a Dacorum Borough Councillor since 2015, representing both the Bennetts End and Adeyfield East wards. He is also Chair of the Strategic Planning and Environment Overview and Scrutiny
Committee and a member of the Audit Committee.
Cllr Birnie said he was honoured to accept the appointment: "Having observed the accomplishments of six preceding mayors in my time as a Councillor, I know I have some hard acts to follow. Thank you to Cllr Stewart Riddick for the manner in which he has
carried out his duties as Mayor during the past year. Dacorum has so much to offer and during my mayoral year I shall focus on promoting the borough as a thriving community for people to live and work in," he said.
The Mayor's Charity is Dacorum Community Trust, which gives out emergency grants to those in need.
Launched in 1976, the Trust is a registered charity dedicated to helping those most in need within the Dacorum area, by managing and distributing funds it raises locally from individuals, companies and organisations. It assists local families and individuals
who are disadvantaged through illness, loss of employment or other difficult circumstances.
Cllr Alan Johnson was appointed Deputy Mayor.
