Statement from the Leader of the Council

On 30 July 2024, in Parliament, the Rt Hon Angela Rayner, new Labour Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), announced major plans to reform the national planning system, in the same statement launching proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework.

Dacorum Borough Council is well-advanced in developing a new Local Plan, one which will positively and carefully work out what necessary development is preferred in Dacorum, in order to improve housing circumstances for our Borough and protect residents from otherwise potential uncontrolled upheaval from developer-led applications.

We are currently carefully considering the implications of these changes in relation to the future planning of growth and housing delivery across the Borough of Dacorum. The Council remains committed to the swift publication of the new Local Plan for Dacorum to support our vision and ambitions for delivering sustainable growth and much needed housing of the right types and in the right places.

The Council will respond positively and constructively to the now current consultation on the revised National Planning Policy Framework, which closes on 24 September 2024. A further, fuller statement will be made on the implications, opportunities for and protection of the Borough in due course.
