Support for national campaign focusing on the future of council housing
We are supporting a national campaign which focuses on the future of council housing in England.
Councillors joined other local authority landlords at an event aimed at Securing the future of Council Housing in Central Hall, Westminster today (Tuesday 3 September).
This event is part of an initiative developed by Southwark Council, and will launch a report that sets out recommendations to Government, including asking for five firm commitments:
1. Establish a new fair and sustainable Housing Revenue Account model
2. Reform unsustainable Right to Buy policies
3. Remove red tape on the Affordable Homes Programme and other funds
4. Announce a Green and Decent Homes Programme
5. Fund the completion of new council homes.
We have agreed for our name to be included as an endorser of the report and will support its aspirations.
Our Portfolio Holder for Housing and Property Services, Councillor Simy Dhyani, said: “I want to extend our deepest gratitude for Southwark Council’s efforts in collaborating with other stock-retaining local authorities to launch this initiative. Lobbying the Government to reform housing policies is both timely and crucial, especially given the ongoing housing crisis that continues to impact so many lives.
“We are acutely aware of the pressing need for comprehensive housing reform. The challenges faced by countless families and individuals struggling to secure affordable and adequate housing need us to stand up collectively. I am fully supportive of this initiative. We recognise that meaningful change requires collective action and unwavering support.
“Together, we can make significant strides towards ensuring that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and dignified housing. We are delighted to be a part of this important movement and look forward to a collaboration that will drive the necessary reforms and create lasting positive change.”
Leader of the Council, Cllr Adrian England joined Cllr Dhyani at the event.
