Green Grants

As part of our climate and ecological emergency work, we provide Green Grants. You can apply for grants of £3,000, £5,000 or £10,000.

This scheme is set up to support projects in our community that tie in with the aims of the Dacorum Climate Action Network and benefit the environment, as well as Dacorum’s residents. The purpose is to encourage and enable local groups to "think global and act local" whilst tackling environmental challenges.

To apply, proposed Green Grant projects must demonstrate that they will actively help towards the mitigation of the climate and ecological emergency locally. Your project will need to fit at least one (ideally more) of our key environmental themes:

  • Energy in buildings
  • Sustainable transport
  • Biodiversity and nature recovery

Projects must also engage with or benefit the local community. The projects with the greatest impact will be awarded the funding.

Please note: activities around litter picking and fly-tipping will not be eligible for funding. If you are interested in litter picking, please see our community litter pick page or our Street Champions scheme.

How to apply

The Green Grant scheme is currently closed for applications. It will open in autumn 2024.

How to prepare to make an application

  • Email climate.action@dacorum.gov.uk for an initial discussion about your project and to answer any questions you may have.

Please note: this scheme is separate to the Community Grant scheme.

  • DENS Bike Project

DENS is a charity that helps support and empower people in Dacorum facing homelessness, poverty and social exclusion. It received Green Grant funding for its Bike Project, which teaches clients to repair and refurbish second-hand bikes donated by the community and resell them for an affordable price. This project supports reducing carbon emissions, which promotes one of our key environmental themes of sustainable transport and also helps reduce the waste in landfills through recycling.

Find out more about the DENS Bike Project.

  • Long Marston School Pond Reinvigoration Project

Tring Rural Parish Council received Green Grant funding to help reinvigorate a pond located on the Long Marston School grounds. The funding went towards materials and a digger to prevent the pond from spreading, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. This project educates school children on the environment and helps mitigate the ecological emergency by supporting and promoting biodiversity and nature recovery within the area.

  • Tring in Transition/Berkhamsted Town Council Thermal Imaging Projects

Tring in Transition (now known as Sustainable Tring) - a community-led organisation - and Berkhamsted Town Council thermal imaging projects both received Green Grant funding. These two projects use thermal imaging to carry out surveys in the community to help people identify where they can save energy and reduce heat loss. Funding for these projects went towards new thermal imaging cameras and training volunteers. These projects promote our environmental theme of energy in buildings by helping residents to increase their energy efficiency and reduce energy loss and carbon emissions.
